Product Details

Our luxuriously soft blankets are available in two different sizes and feature incredible artwork on the top surface. The bottom surface is white. Our 100% polyester blankets are available in two different styles: plush fleece and sherpa fleece. Plush fleece blankets are soft and fluffy on both sides, whereas sherpa blankets are smooth like a soft sweater on the artwork side (i.e. shorter threads) which provides for a sharper image. Looking for a recommendation? Go with a 60" x 80" plush fleece blanket. It's soft and luxurious on both sides... the artwork looks incredible... and the size is just right for everyone.

Artist's Description

This was the very first protozoa illustration I made, back in 2016 when I first saw the need for them in our public microscope demonstrations. I chose to draw Vorticella, which has been my favourite ciliate since I first started working at the microscope. Vorticella is typically associated with water, but can be found in the soil as well. They are usually seen fixed to particles of debris by a stalk which can coil up like a spring if the cell is disturbed. They can also be seen swimming freely on occasion. Vorticella is a filter feeder, using a ring of cilia (tiny hairs) around its mouth opening to create a whirling vortex in the water, sucking in particles of food. Vorticella mainly feeds on bacteria. To the left you can also see a small flagellate swimming by. Looking at the surrounding soil, you can see that at a microscopic level soil is so much more than the inert substance we refer to as “dirt”. It is a diverse and fascinating habitat, made up of many different fragments a...

About Katelyn Solbakk

Katelyn Solbakk

My goal is to inspire curiosity by imagining how microscopic creatures might look if we could see them in their natural habitats, and view them as amazing wildlife rather than "specimens" in a laboratory. Many of us are unsettled by the thought of invisible microscopic life forms all around us, so I try to balance the "ick factor" by showing that these creatures can be beautiful. The microscopic world is truly fantastic and offers a lot of inspiration for fantasy themes, which you will see in some of my more playful work like the hookah-smoking tardigrade inspired by the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland. I hope my art can help bring us a little bit closer to the mysterious world of microbiology that is the foundation for all our...
