A testate amoeba of the genus Euglypha in soil, using stippling on A4 stone paper. The amoeba is crawling through a space in a rich soil ecosystem, surrounded by particles of mineral and organic matter, fungal strands, bacteria and small flagellates.
About Kate Solbakk
My goal is to inspire curiosity by imagining how microscopic creatures might look if we could see them in their natural habitats, and view them as amazing wildlife rather than "specimens" in a laboratory. Many of us are unsettled by the thought of invisible microscopic life forms all around us, so I try to balance the "ick factor" by showing that these creatures can be beautiful. The microscopic world is truly fantastic and offers a lot of inspiration for fantasy themes, which you will see in some of my more playful work like the hookah-smoking tardigrade inspired by the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland.
