Plants actively influence the micro-ecosystem that surrounds their roots. By releasing sugars and proteins into the surrounding soil, a plant can boost populations of bacteria and fungi. The bacteria and fungi are consumed by protozoa and larger micro-animals, who then cycle nutrients back into the rhizosphere in a form plants can use.
