Artist's Description

A testate amoeba of the genus Difflugia, which has started using microplastic fragments to build its test (shell). I chose a strong blue for the fragment in the center, because I wanted it to stand out as something noticeably different from the surroundings. Something you can't help looking at again and again. This is how many of us experience nature now; trying to appreciate its beauty, with our attention relentlessly drawn back to its destruction.

My goal is to inspire curiosity by imagining how microscopic creatures might look if we could see them in their natural habitats, and view them as amazing wildlife rather than "specimens" in a laboratory. Many of us are unsettled by the thought of invisible microscopic life forms all around us, so I try to balance the "ick factor" by showing that these creatures can be beautiful. The microscopic world is truly fantastic and offers a lot of inspiration for fantasy themes, which you will see in some of my more playful work like the hookah-smoking tardigrade inspired by the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland.
